Richard C. Budd

Richard C. Budd made his final journey to our Lord Wednesday morning, November 23, 2011 at Riverwoods Senior Care Home in Lewisburg, PA. Richard Clayton Budd, a veteran of the Pacific Theater in World War II, former long-time employee of IBM, Corp in New York State and a resident of Lewisburg since 1994 died suddenly Wednesday morning in Riverwoods Senior Living Community in Lewisburg. He had been in declining health since suffering a pair of minor strokes in the summer of 2010. He was born February 24, 1927 in Middletown NY, the son of Herbert C. Budd and the former Ella H. Rutan and attended the Middletown schools, graduating from Middletown High School in 1944 and enlisting in the US Navy later that year. After a brief period of training as a quartermaster, in the Navy the person responsible for navigation on the ship, he served in the Pacific during World War II on the newly-commissioned USS San Marcos and later in Japan during 1945 & 46, receiving the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater, Occupation and Victory medals. He remained in the US Navy Inactive Reserve until 1954. Mr. Budd pursued a degree in accounting under the GI Bill of Rights, first at Mohawk College in Utica NY and then at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, graduating in 1950. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity while at Bowling Green University. After his graduation, he held a series of accounting jobs in Middletown before joining Frederick Hart & Co, later Daystrom Electric Co and now a unit of Schlumberger, as an internal auditor and later controller of the International Sales Division. In 1963, Mr. Budd joined IBM at its then recently-opened Components Division plant in East Fishkill NY. At East Fishkill, he wrote specifications for a computerized accounting system that was installed at several IBM plants around the country. As a project manager in East Fishkill, he was responsible for hiring the first female and minority in management at the plant. After receiving several managerial promotions, he was transferred to General Technology Division Headquarters in Harrison NY, where he was responsible for reporting inventory levels and selected components costs for locations in the division as well as logistics and producing accounting policies and procedures. He finished his career at IBM in 1989 as program manager for special accounting studies, retiring in April of the year. Mr. Budd married the former Marguerite L. Heffelfinger, of Bloomsburg, PA, on October 13, 1956 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bloomsburg. She survives him, as do his two children, Richard C. Budd, Jr. and wife, Monika, of Prievidza Slovak Republic, a translator and auditor and Barbara A. Budd, a graphic designer with the Lewisburg Standard Journal, and two grandchildren, Dagmar M. and David R. Budd. A sister, Claire B. Hanna, died in 1977. Mr. Budd came to Lewisburg in 1994, where he was director and president of the Willowbrook Homeowners Assoc from 1999 thru 2003. He enjoyed music, traveling and golf and was a member of the Bucknell Golf Club before his illness. At the time of his death, he was also a member of Triune-Obed Masonic Lodge #782 in Poughkeepsie, and Master in 1969, as wells as a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory and Cyprus Temple AAONOMS, both of Albany NY. He belonged to the congregation of the Reformed Dutch Church in Poughkeepsie, serving as treasurer for 14 years and was an elder in the church consistory. Funeral plans are pending.
