Elmer L. Hartzell, age 88, of Mt. Pleasant Township, died on Friday afternoon, January 10, 2014 at his home and under the care of Columbia Montour Home Hospice.
Elmer was born on Monday, May 11, 1925, in Bloomsburg, a son of the late William and Anna (Long) Hartzell. Throughout his younger years, Elmer attended the local Bloomsburg area schools. In June of 1947, Elmer married his loving wife, L. Jean Millard. For over 35 years, Elmer was employed by Bloomsburg University as the plumbing foreman. For many years, he and his wife were faithful members of the First English Baptist Church in Bloomsburg until health would not allow. Elmer served as a member of the Bloomsburg Fireman's Relief Association, and also volunteered for many years delivering food to elderly for the Bloomsburg Meals on Wheels program. Elmer loved spending his time on the family farm raising crops and hunting on the land.
On August 23, 1992, Elmer was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, L. Jean (Millard) Hartzell. He was also preceded by a son: Wayne A. "Tiny" Hartzell in 1991; two brothers: George H. Hartzell and William H. Hartzell; and three sisters: Elizabeth Kessler, Margaret Swisher and Altha Heimbach.
Survivors include his son: Dennis B. Hartzell and wife, Mary Fox, of Bloomsburg; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a sister: Sylvia Hartzell of Bloomsburg.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will begin on Tuesday, January 14 at 1 p.m. from the First English Baptist Church, 700 Millville Road, Bloomsburg with his pastor, Rev. Dr. Lee Barnhardt, officiating. Graveside committal services immediately follow in the Millville Cemetery.
