Thomas L. Ohl, age 74, of Pony Trail Drive, Bloomsburg, died unexpectedly Monday, September 6, at his home. He was a resident of his Hemlock Twp. home since 1968. He was born on Tuesday, December 24, 1935 in Bloomsburg, a son of the late Lee F. Ohl and Grace P. (Edwards) Ohl McHenry.
Thomas was a 1953 graduate of the Bloomsburg High School, a 1957 graduate of the Bloomsburg State Teachers College and in 1968 he received his Masters in Education degree from Millersville State College.
From 1957 to 1960 Mr. Ohl taught Biology and Science at Middleburg High School in Snyder County. He then went to Kennard Dale High School, York County where in addition to being Biology and Science teacher he was an athletic coach from 1960 to 1968. In 1968 he took a position as a Professor in the Math Department at Bloomsburg University where he taught until his retirement in December of1991.
As an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Tom served in music ministry in the Church Choir, Praise Choir, and the Acapella Praise Choir. He was also a member of the church Personnel Committee and was active with the Sawdust Ministry. He was a former Church Council member and a former Sunday School teacher. He also assisted on a Katrina Relief Mission trip.
His community service included Hemlock Township Zoning Hearing Board member and former treasurer of the Protestant Campus Ministries. Tom enjoyed hunting and fishing, photography and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years: Cecile Yeakley Ohl, two daughters: Pamela Berman of Charleston, SC and Rebecca Ohl of Reston, VA; a son: Frank T. Ohl and wife, Judy, of Orangeville; three grandsons: Robert Berman, Aaron Ohl and Cory Ohl. A brother, Rev. Arthur Ohl and wife, Ruth Anne of Mora, MO also survive.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Christine Heeter and a brother: Dale Ohl.
Friends will be received on Thursday, September 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg and on Friday, September 10 from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9 St. Lukes Way, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will begin on Friday at 11 a.m. at the church with his pastor, Rev. Jeffrey G. Bohan, officiating. Burial will be in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge.
