Roland O. Shaffer, age 93, of Bloomsburg, died on Saturday morning, November 16, 2013 a resident of Geisinger-Bloomsburg Health Care Center since 2007.
Roland was born on Wednesday, December 31, 1919 in Scott Township, a son of the late Roy C. and Lillian M. (Sitler) Shaffer. Throughout his younger years, he attended school at the former Scott School. Immediately following his education, Roland enlisted with the United States Army where he served his country faithfully during World War II. As a Corporal with the 44th Field Artillery Division, Roland was award the merit of the EAME Ribbon with five Bronze Service Stars and Arrowhead, and the Good Conduct Ribbon. On September 29, 1945, Roland was honorably discharged from his time of dedicated service in the United States Army.
After returning home to Bloomsburg, Roland was employed for many years at the former Magee Carpet Co., and most recently by Kawneer in Bloomsburg until his retirement in 1981. Throughout his younger years, Roland attended the Shiloh Bible Church in Almedia. Roland always loved spending his time outside, and would take long walks until most recently when his health would not allow. Roland will be remembered by his family and friends for his meticulous garden, and his talented 'green thumb'.
Roland was preceded in death by his loving wife many years ago, the late Marjorie E. (Thomas) Shaffer; and five siblings: Doyle, Earl, Raymond, Mae and Pearl Shaffer.
Survivors include a daughter: Crissie Brassington and husband, Charles, of Fernville; a grandson: Chad Brassington of Catawissa; a sister: Grace Shaffer of Bloomsburg; and a brother: Howard Shaffer also of Bloomsburg.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, November 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will also begin on Wednesday, November 20 at 11 a.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., Bloomsburg with family friend, James Kline, officiating. Graveside services with full Military Honors will immediately follow in the Creveling Cemetery, Almedia.
