Marilyn S. Broadt passed into her Savior's loving arms on Monday October 30, 2017 at home under the loving care of Geisinger Home Health and Hospice and surrounded by her family at the age of 81. She was failing in health for the last 18 months. Marilyn was the daughter of the late Homer and Jennie (McMichael) Shuman. Marilyn began playing piano when she was eight years old and has been the organist for Emanuel's Reformed Church for over 50 years and earlier had played at Emmanuel Lutheran Church for about 13 years.
As Marilyn grew up on her parents' dairy farm she was very active in farming, 4 H and church. On the farm she learned to drive the family's John Deere B at the age of 6, cutting the pea vines so the men could gather them. Her family hosted a company pea viner, Marilyn helped load the viner and also load the boxes of peas onto the flatbed trucks so they could take them to Bloomsburg to the cannery factory. She also helped pick many baskets of tomatoes and load them on a truck and drive them to the cannery factory all to get paid 3 cents per 5/8th basket. She cultivated beans and corn, mowed hay and even pulled hay up into the hay mow with a horse. Marilyn sometimes milked cows by hand and kept an eye over them in the pasture to keep track of any fence jumpers when they would stray. Her father taught her many things growing up, including how to work hard. Her mother taught her how to cook, but cooking was not her favorite job.
Marilyn married her high school sweetheart, Roger C. Broadt on July 4, 1958. For 59 years, together, they have built a successful farm equipment business and raised their two sons, David and Daniel.
Marilyn was a cub scout leader and taxi driver for her boys. Marilyn was a member and secretary of the Main Township Volunteer Fire Company, Treasurer of the Main Twp. Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Treasurer of the Mainville Sunday School, member of the Ladies Guild at Emanuel's Reformed Church and also the Choir Director playing both the organ and piano.
She loved to eat out at local restaurants and fellowship with her friends. Marilyn attended the Mainville school and graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1953.
Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Roger, sons David Broadt and his wife Betty, and Daniel Broadt and his wife Carolyn; 6 grandchildren, Bethany, Jonathan, Rebecca, Kristen, Michael and Joshua, all of Bloomsburg. Four siblings; Janet Kelchner, Orangeville; Judy Boody, Newtown Square; Duane Shuman and Thomas Shuman both of Bloomsburg.
