Judith W. Hanson, age 95, of Bloomsburg, died on Saturday morning, January 21, 2012 after a brief time at Columbia Montour Home Hospice at Maria Hall. She was most recently a resident at Bloomsburg Health Care Center in Bloomsburg.
Judith was born on Tuesday, December 19, 1916 in Montevideo, Minnesota the daughter of the late Bert Abbey and Alice Chambers Whitmore. She graduated from Montevideo High School and attended the University of Minnesota. She met her husband, James Hanson while she was working as a supervisor at the R.R. Donnelly Company in Chicago when he returned from serving in the military in World War II. They married on December 23, 1946 and raised three loving children while living in Delmar, NY. Mrs. Hanson had also been employed in the Bursar's office at the State University of New York in Albany for five years. They moved to Bloomsburg in 1976.
Judy was a member of the St. Columba Catholic parish in Bloomsburg for 37 years.
She enjoyed bringing humor and fun to simple everyday events. She loved traveling and shopping and was just as excited by a sale at Nordstrom's as a purchase at The Dollar Store.
She recently celebrated her 95th birthday at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center with two large pieces of chocolate cake.
Her husband James preceded her in death on April 12, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a brother Bruce Whitmore and his wife Ruth.
She is survived by her children, Alice Giglio and her husband Daniel of Thompson Ridge, NY; James Hanson and his wife Elizabeth, Madison, Wisconsin; and Lou Ellen Hanson, Bloomsburg; five grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Katharyn Hanson, Sara Giglio, Karl Hanson, Daniel Giglio and Kevin Giglio, her beloved brother, John Whitmore and his wife Ava, Bloomington, Minnesota; and her nieces and nephews in Minnesota: Beth (Whitmore) and husband, Galen Slater; Sara (Whitmore) Carpenter; Lance Whitmore; Bill Whitmore; and Tim Whitmore; all with whom she shared wonderful times.
A time of Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg. Wake services will be held at 8 p.m. from the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 26 at 10 a.m. from St. Columba Catholic Church, Third and Iron Street in Bloomsburg with Rev. Monsignor Robert E. Lawrence, celebrant. Judith will be laid to rest in her home state of Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contribution be made to: The Bloomsburg Food Cupboard, St. Columba Church P.O.
