Doyle S. Zimmerman, age 100, a life-long resident of Bloomsburg, died on Sunday evening, May 18, 2014, a resident of the Geisinger-Bloomsburg Health Care Center and under the care of Columbia Montour Home Hospice.
Doyle was born on Saturday, February 28, 1914 in Bloomsburg, a son of the late David and Mary Ellen (Yorty) Zimmerman. Throughout his younger years, Doyle attended and later graduated from the Bloomsburg High School in 1931. As a young man, Doyle was employed for many years at the former Bloomsburg A&P. For over 30 years, Doyle was employed by the former Morning Press, currently the Press Enterprise, as the Advertising Manager until his retirement in 1979. Doyle was a life-long member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomsburg where he also served as the former Treasurer and assisted with co-coordinating the Men's spaghetti dinner. For many years, Doyle volunteered as the coach and referee for the local church basketball league. He was also a member of the former Liberty Fire Company in Bloomsburg. Doyle also had a passion for raising Beagle dogs, and spent many fond memories hunting in the fields with them. Most of all, Doyle loved spending family time and memories with his family and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Doyle was preceded by his loving wife of 69 years, Dorothy E. Zimmerman, who passed on August 30, 2007. Doyle remained as the last surviving member of his immediate family, and was preceded by his five siblings: Elva Beagle, Margaret Simon, Ruth Quick, and Roy Zimmerman.
Survivors include his only daughter: Saundra K. Vincent and husband, John, of Bloomsburg; five grandchildren: Mark Vincent, Kim Shannon, Brian Vincent, Jeffrey Vincent, and William Vincent; and also eight great-grandchildren.
A time of Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday evening, May 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, May 21 at 1 p.m. from the Wesley United Methodist Church, 130 West Third and Market Street, Bloomsburg with Rev. Dr. Gary D. Weaver, officiating. Graveside committal services will immediately follow in Lime Ridge. The Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg is honored to be serving the Zimmerman and Vincent families.
